Dubai is one of the most competitive app markets in the region. Choosing the right partner to build your product matters more than almost any other early decision — here's how to do it well.
Search "app development company Dubai" and you'll get hundreds of results, from one-person freelancers to large agencies to offshore shops with a local landing page. Prices range wildly, portfolios vary in quality, and it can be hard to tell who will actually deliver. The good news: a handful of practical checks separate a partner who ships from one who disappears.
Start with proof, not promises
The single best signal is a portfolio of real, live apps. Not screenshots or "concepts" — apps you can download from the App Store and Google Play and use yourself. Open them. Do they feel polished? Are they still maintained? A company that has shipped and supported products has learned lessons that a slick pitch deck can't fake. At Khatib Designs we've shipped 100+ products across six countries since 2015, and we'll always point a prospective client to work they can hold in their hand.
Look for UAE-market and Arabic fluency
Building for Dubai isn't the same as building for London or Bangalore. Your app likely needs proper Arabic support with right-to-left layouts that feel native, local payment methods, and an understanding of how people in the Emirates actually use their phones. A partner who treats Arabic as an afterthought — a machine translation bolted on at the end — will produce something that feels foreign to half your users. Ask to see a bilingual app they've built, and check the Arabic side as carefully as the English.
Questions worth asking
- Who owns the code and the accounts? You should own your source code, your App Store and Play accounts, and your cloud infrastructure. Get this in writing before you start.
- Who is actually building it? Some agencies sell with senior staff and deliver with juniors or subcontractors. Ask who will be on your project day to day.
- What happens after launch? An app is never "done." Ask about maintenance, updates for new OS versions, and how bugs get handled once you're live.
- Can I talk to a past client? A confident partner will connect you with someone they've delivered for.
Red flags to avoid
Be cautious of anyone who quotes a firm price before understanding your scope, promises an unrealistically fast timeline, or can't explain their process in plain language. Watch out for portfolios full of apps that are no longer on the stores. And be wary of the cheapest bid — building an app badly the first time almost always costs more than building it properly, because you end up paying twice.
Local presence vs. proven delivery
Many Dubai businesses assume they need a company with a physical office down the road. In practice, what matters is proven delivery, clear communication, and market understanding. A GCC-native studio that works primarily remotely can serve a Dubai or Abu Dhabi client as well as a local office — often faster, and at a better price, because you're paying for engineering rather than a prestige address. We work this way across the whole UAE and the wider Gulf.
How a good partner communicates
Beyond the portfolio, pay attention to how a company talks to you before any money changes hands. Do they reply clearly and on time? Do they push back honestly when your idea has a weak spot, or just agree with everything to win the deal? A partner who is straight with you during the sales conversation will be straight with you during the build — and that matters far more over a six-month project than a polished proposal document. In the UAE, where teams are often multicultural and work across time zones, clear written communication and a shared source of truth for decisions are worth as much as raw engineering skill.
Making the decision
Shortlist two or three partners, give each the same brief, and compare not just the price but how they think. The one that asks sharp questions about your users and your business — rather than just nodding at your feature list — is usually the one worth hiring. If you'd like a straight conversation about your idea, see how we work with UAE businesses or tell us about your project.
